Schnabel, Julien

(1951– ) painter, conceptual artist; born in New York City. He studied at the University of Houston (1969–73), settled in New York City, worked as a cab driver and cook, and traveled in Europe. A controversial avant-garde artist, he used a collage technique incorporating fiberglass, broken crockery, and various other objects on his mammoth canvases.
