Union de Paises Exportadores de Banano

An organization established to attempt to create a cartel for countries exporting bananas to North America, especially the United States. Most members were located in Central and South America. The organization proposed that member states enact a tax on banana exports to improve government revenues from banana trade. The organization was formed in 1974; the following year, it was revealed that the chairman of United Brands had bribed the president of Honduras to lower the tax.
