Luchitskii, Vladimir Ivanovich

 

Born Apr. 20 (May 2), 1877, in Kiev; died there Oct. 20, 1949. Soviet geologist and petrographer. Member of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (1945). Honored Scientist of the Ukrainian SSR (1947).

Luchitskii graduated from the University of Kiev in 1899. He was a professor there from 1913 to 1923 and from 1945 to 1949 and also served as a professor at the Moscow Academy of Mines from 1923 (it was renamed the Moscow Institute of Geological Research in 1930). In 1947 he became the director of the Institute of Geological Sciences of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR. He studied the petrography and mineralogy of the Ukrainian crystalline massif, the stratigraphy of the Precam-brian of the Ukraine and the Eastern European Platform, the hydrogeology of the Crimea, and the mineral resources of the Ukrainian SSR (phosphorites, bauxites, kaolin, and graphite). The first comprehensive work on the petrographic provinces of the USSR was written by Luchitskii jointly with E. A. Kuznetsov. Also well known is his textbook Petrography (1909; 6th ed., vols. 1-2, 1947-49). Luchitskii was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor.
