Established: Authorized as City of Refuge National Historical Park on July 26, 1955; renamed on November 10, 1978.
Location:On the Kona Coast of the island of Hawaii. Take HI 11 to HI 160 and continue downhill 4 miles to park entrance.
Facilities:Picnic area, rest rooms (é), bathhouse, visitor center (é), museum/exhibit, self-guided tour/trail. Entrance fee required.
Activities:Hiking, swimming, fishing, scuba diving, snorkeling, wildlife viewing.
Special Features:Until 1819, the year of the death of Kamehameha I, vanquished Hawaiian warriors, noncombatants, and kapu breakers could escape death by reaching this sacred ground. Park includes ancient house sites, royal fishponds, coconut groves, and spectacular shore scenery.
