a species of protozoan from Southeast Asia that causes monkey malaria with a quotidian fever cycle; highly fatal in rhesus monkeys; naturally acquired by a human in Malaysia, and also transmitted to humans experimentally.

Plasmodium knowlesi

A species found in Southeast Asia. It is structurally similar to P. malariae. Although it primarily infects other primates, it can infect humans and produce a debilitating febrile illness. See also: Plasmodium
