Thessaloniki Plain

Thessaloniki Plain

a plain in northern Greece, on the littoral of the Gulf of Salonika of the Aegean Sea. Its length from east to west is approximately 70 km, and its width extends to 65 km. The plain is intersected by the Axios (Vardar) River and is situated in a tectonic downwarp, filled primarily with alluvial and marine deposits. Grains and cotton are grown in the coastal lowland, and there are truck gardens, orchards, and vineyards in the hilly areas around the perimeter of the plain. The city of Thessaloniki (Salonika) is located on the plain.
