coarctation

 [ko″ahrk-ta´shun] stenosis.coarctation of aorta a congenital heart defect consisting of localized deformity of the tunica media of the aorta, causing narrowing (usually severe) of the lumen of the vessel  Coarctation of the aorta. Flow patterns are normal but are diminished distal to the coarctation. Blood pressure is increased in vessels leaving the aorta proximal to the coarctation.
