the western part of the Silesian-Małopolska Upland in southern Poland. The Silesian Upland is a plateau 200 to 300 m high, divided into distinct ridges by river valleys. It is composed primarily of coal-bearing Carboniferous strata overlain by Mesozoic limestones and other sedimentary rocks. It includes a large part of the Upper Silesian coal field.
