Silhouette Film

Silhouette Film

an animated cartoon in which the characters are represented by silhouette figures. The figures are cut out of monochromatic, usually black, paper. The motion of the figures is achieved by moving them on a flat white or retouched background and photographing them frame by frame after each movement. The first silhouette films were produced in Germany in the 1920’s. Work on silhouette films is being continued by animation cartoonists in the German Democratic Republic.
