strain-counterstrain therapy

strain-counterstrain therapy

Bodywork
A system of soft tissue manipulation developed by an American osteopath, Dr L Jones, which is intended to relieve pain.
In strain-counterstrain therapy, the practitioner identifies hypersensitive or painful zones (trigger points) in the muscle and connective tissue, which, when stimulated, refer the sensation of pain to another region in the body; once the trigger points are identified, the practitioner moves the body into a position that relieves the referred pain, and maintains the position for one to two minutes. The body is then placed in its original position and the trigger point pressed; in most cases, the referred pain has disappeared.
