Union for the Rebirth of Russia

an anti-Soviet organization that was formed in March 1918 in Moscow by representatives of petit bourgeois parties whose objective was to overthrow Soviet power. The Union for the Rebirth of Russia included Popular Socialists (N. V. Chaikovskii, V. A. Miakotin, A. V. Pesh-ekhonov), right-wing Socialist Revolutionaries (N. D. Avksent’-ev, I. I. Bunakov-Fundaminskii), Constitutional Democrats (Cadets; N. I. Astrov, N. M. Kishkin, D. I. Shakhovskoi), and several Menshevik Defensists. Professor S. P. Mel’gunov was also a member. The organization had branches in Petrograd, Arkhangel’sk, Vologda, and other cities.

In 1918 the union participated in the organization of anti-Soviet uprisings in northern Russia, the Volga Region, and Siberia. Its representatives belonged to counterrevolutionary “governments,” including the Supreme Administration of the Northern Region and the Committee of Members of the Constituent Assembly. In April 1919 the union joined the counterrevolutionary Tactical Center, which in February 1920 was defeated decisively by the All-Russian Extraordinary Commission.
