Roman troops (26,000) under the command of the consul L. Aemilius Paullus routed the 40,000-man Macedonian army of King Perseus, who lost 20,000 in dead and 11,000 in captured. The victory of the Romans was due to the superiority of the Roman maniple formation as compared to the tactics of the slow-moving Macedonian phalanx.
