Union of Polish Workers

(Zwiazek Robotników Pol-skich), from 1889 to 1893, a revolutionary organization of the Polish proletariat. Founded in Warsaw by J. Marchlewski, J. Leder, and others, the Union of Polish Workers brought together workers’ circles and intelligentsia groups. It urged the workers to launch a socialist revolution and to liquidate the capitalist order. It organized socialist propaganda and economic and political struggle—such as strikes and May 1 demonstrations—on the part of the proletariat. From late 1890, organizations of the Union of Polish Workers were established in Zyrardów, L ódz, Zgierz, Dabrowa Górnicza, Sosnowiec, and elsewhere. In 1893 the Union of Polish Workers merged with the worker-members of the second Proletariat party to form the Social Democracy of the Kingdom of Poland.
