Platybelodon

Platybelodon

a genus of extinct mammals of the order Proboscidea. Externally, Platybelodon resembled the hippopotamus. The anterior part of the lower jaw and the tusks (incisors) were greatly elongated and spade-shaped and were adapted for obtaining plants from the ground. The Platybelodon lived along rivers and lakes. Their remains have been found in Miocene deposits in the Northern Caucasus (first described by A. A. Borisiak) and in China and Mongolia.
