Valvasor, Ivan Vajkhard

Born May 28, 1641, in Ljubljana; died Sept. 19, 1693, in Krško. Yugoslav historian. Descended from an Italian merchant family.

Valvasor lived in Carniola (Slovenia) and studied at the Jesuit college in Ljubljana. His historical-geographical works about the Slovene lands established the beginning of Slovene historiography. Valvasor’s work The Glory of the Duchy of Carniola (1689, in German) is an important source of Slovene history of the 16th and 17th centuries, especially the period of the Reformation and the Counter-Reformation. Valvasor was chosen a member of the London Royal Society in 1687.
