Pyongyang Textile Works

a large textile enterprise in the People’s Democratic Republic of Korea, producing about 25 percent of the country’s total output of cotton fabric. The part of the enterprise that had been put into operation in 1950 was totally destroyed during the Fatherland Liberation War of 1950–53. In the course of implementing a three-year plan to restore and develop the country’s economy (1954–56), the textile works was rebuilt with the aid of the USSR and equipped with up-to-date machinery.

The enterprise includes a spinning factory, a weaving factory, a dyeing and finishing factory, and a knitwear factory. The initial annual output was 60 million meters of cotton fabric. As a result of new equipment introduced between 1957 and 1970 the output has doubled. The enterprise has more than 3,000 looms and 100,000 spindles. A polytechnical institute has been established at the works to train skilled textile workers.
