Schwann, Theodor

(1810–82) German anatomist who first recognized the egg as a cell in 1838. He showed that all living organisms are composed of cells, and also that fermentation is brought about by living organisms. He discovered PEPSIN in gastric juice and the SCHWANN CELL is named after him.
