Schwartzkopf, (H.) Norman

(1934– ) soldier; born in Trenton, N.J. A 1956 West Point graduate, he served as deputy commander of U.S. forces in the Grenada invasion (1983) and held a series of senior staff and field commands in the United States and Europe. Promoted to full general in 1988, he led the Allied forces in the brief desert war against Iraq in January–February 1991. An overnight national hero, he retired later in 1991.
