a city in the German Democratic Republic, near Frankfurt. Located on the Hohensaaten-Friedrichsthal Canal, on the left bank of the Oder. Population, 47,300 (1975). Fuel and nitrogen fertilizers are produced at a petroleum-refining and petro chemical combine, which was built at the international Druzhba (Friendship) Petroleum Pipeline. Schwedt has oil pipelines to the city of Rostock and to the Leuna-2 Petrochemical Combine. The city serves as a produce distributor to the Berlin area. A news print factory is located in Schwedt.
