(pop culture)The big blue ball of wonder, the popular 1980s superhero the Tick, is best known for defending “The City” as he bounds over rooftops with his rallying cry of “Spoon!” Created as a wacky parody of superheroes by cartoonist Ben Edlund, the Tick first appeared in the pages of comic store New England Comics' July–August 1986 newsletter. Since that time, he has segued into various forms of media and merchandise, not the least of which was his animated Saturday-morning cartoon show (1994–1997) that ignited an intense cult following. While fans raved about the Tick, they also embraced the hero's popular rogues' gallery. Tick villains are not your ordinary supervillians. The debonair and ultra-powerful Chairface Chippendale sports a chair for a head. The deadly Chainsaw Vigilante wants to rid The City of all the superheroes. The Angry Red Herring has machine guns for eyes, and delights in rubbing petroleum jelly on his belly to escape the clutches of heroes. The boy-genius Brainchild is a grade-schooler gone bad—he once captured the Tick and turned him into a two-headed bird that only spoke high-school French. The Deadly Bulb is a man who has a pig for a left leg and a light bulb for a head. Betty, the Ant Queen, commands legions of ants to do her bidding. Other villains include the Evil Midnight Bomber, the Ottoman Empress, the Man-Eating Cow, the Red Scare, Dinosaur Neil, Pineapple Pokopo, the Terror, Omnipotus the Eater of Planets, Thrakkorzog, the Guy with Ears Like Little Raisins, and the Idea Men. Their sheer absurdness made them formidable enemies of the Tick, added to the hero's escalating popularity, and fueled the merchandising effort. The Tick and his rogues were last seen in the short-lived but critically acclaimed 2001–2002 livea-ction TV series from FOX.
