Arabs of Middle Asia

a people in Middle Asia.

The Arabs live in small groups (mostly in the Bukhara and Samarkand oblasts of the Uzbek SSR) among the Uzbek, Tadzhik, and Turkmen populace with whom they are gradually merging. Population in 1959 was 8,000. They speak Arabic dialects (over 34 percent) as well as Uzbek, Tadzhik, and Turkmen. The linguistic and anthropological evidence suggests that the Arabs of Middle Asia are descendants of emigrants from Mesopotamia and Central Arabia who came to northern Afghanistan at different times and from there moved on to the right bank of the Amu Darya River. The Arabs of Middle Asia are similar in culture, occupations, and way of life to the Uzbeks and Tadzhiks, but they retain some features of their ancient culture. Religious Arabs are Sun-nite Muslims.
