[rān′yās ′īs·ə‚lād·ər] (engineering) A mechanical barrier made of steel that surrounds the area in which germ-free vertebrates and accessory equipment are housed; has electricity for light and power, an exit-entry opening with a steam barrier, a means for sterile air exchange, glass viewing port, and neoprene gloves which allow handling of the animals.
