Silver Banshee

Silver Banshee

(pop culture)Silver Banshee is a relative blip on the map in the world of Superman's arch-enemies, introduced in Action Comics #595 (1987) in a story written and illustrated by John Byrne. There it was revealed that, centuries ago, Siobhan McDougal was denied her birthright as the leader of her Gaelic clan because of her gender. While calling upon mystic forces to keep control of the clan out of the hands of her brothers and to claim what is rightfully hers, she is banished to a demonic netherworld where a Crone transforms her into the Silver Banshee—a murderous, silver-haired, skeleton- like being empowered to exact revenge on the McDougal descendants. Now possessing supernatural strength, speed, and the ability to teleport, Silver Banshee's greatest asset is her eerie wail, which can kill a human within earshot and shred metal. Her search through Metropolis for an ancient magical book thrusts her into conflict with Superman, who, with the help of fellow hero Martian Manhunter, narrowly defeats the wrathful villainess. Although envisioned by Byrne as one of a new generation of super-rogues, Silver Banshee has appeared infrequently since the late 1980s. In the two-issue limited series Superman: Silver Banshee (1998–1999), Siobhan's soul was united with McDougal heir Lacy MacElwain, binding both women together to the Silver Banshee for all of time. In 2005 Silver Banshee made her animated-television debut as one of the Legion of Doom on the Cartoon Network's Justice League Unlimited (2004–present).
