Silverman, Sime Silverman, Sime(1873–1933) newspaper publisher; born in Cortland, N.Y. After working on the New York Morning Telegraph (1896–1905), he founded Variety, a weekly dedicated to show business. It soon became an institution, respected for both its dollars-and-cents approach to the business and its Runyonesque approach to shows, and its slangy and often original style added many words to the language. He remained its publisher and editor to his death, which came right after he had started a Hollywood edition of his paper. |
