Rezana

a monetary unit of ancient Rus’ based on the kuna. According to the short redaction of the Russkaia Pravda, in the 11th century the relationship of the rezana to contemporary monetary units was as follows: it equaled one-fiftieth of a grivna, two-fifths of a nogata, one-half of a kuna, and three veveritsy. The word rezana originates from the verb rezat’ (“to cut”): the earliest rezany were cuttings and scraps of Arabian dirhams which circulated widely in ancient Rus’. In the 12th century, the rezana became equal in value to the kuna and took on the latter’s name.
