Pytheasa Greek navigator and scholar of the fourth century B.C. A native of the city of Massilia (Marseille). Between 350 and 320 B.C., Pytheas voyaged along the western coast of Europe and was evidently the first to round the British Isles, which he called the Pretanic Isles. He was also the first to provide reliable information about the islands’ natural environment and the occupations of the inhabitants.
