In N central CA, north of Chico; organized Apr 9, 1856 from Butte, Colusa, and Shasta counties. Name Origin: For the city, origin and meaning uncertain. It is almost certainly Indian, though an Arabian generic tihama 'hot lowlands' is frequently found in Arabic placenames. The Indian parallel term may also mean 'lowlands' or shallow,' as in a ford of a river.
