Iran’s first modern higher educational institution and research center. The University of Tehran was founded in 1934 and, as of 1974, had faculties of letters and humanities, agriculture, dentistry, fine arts, law, medicine, pharmacy, science, engineering, theology, veterinary medicine, forestry, public health, business administration, education, and economics. There are 35 institutes attached to the university, among them a cancer institute, a geophysics institute, an institute of public health research, institutes of geography, economic research, psychology, social research, communications research, hydro science and water resources technology, nuclear research, and experimental medicine. The university also has the Institute for the Dehkhoda Encyclopedia. During the 1974–75 academic year, enrollment was approximately 20,000, and the teaching staff numbered approximately 1,500. The university’s libraries contain more than 300,000 volumes.
