attritus[ə′trīd·əs] (geology) Visible-to-ultramicroscopic particles of vegetable matter produced by microscopic and other organisms in vegetable deposits, particularly in swamps and bogs. The dull gray to nearly black, frequently striped portion of material that makes up the bulk of some coals and alternate bands of bright anthraxylon in well-banded coals. |
