Specialist multidisciplinary team. A generic term for a multidisciplinary team whose members formally or informally have a subspecialty interest germane to a condition—typically an “exotic” cancer (e.g., mesothelioma) or soft tissue tumour, or an unexpected complication in a more pedestrian tumour—being discussed by the team. A typical sMDT will discuss patients in whom there are local difficulties with the diagnosis or staging, or patients with a performance status (PS) of 0–2 where chemotherapy, radical treatment (including surgery or multimodality therapy) or entry into a clinical trial may be an option.
