Specialist Training Authority

The non-governmental public body (“quango”) which formerly oversaw the training of specialists (consultants) in the UK in conjunction with the joint Committee on Postgraduate Training, a function which passed to the Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board (PMETB) in 2004/5, and then to the GMC in 2010. One of the STA's roles was to approve or reject applications for specialist registration from doctors with overseas qualifications.
