Symeon Logothetes

Byzantine chronicler of the tenth century.

Symeon is the author of a chronicle covering the period from 842 to 948; it was completed some time between 948 and 963. The first two parts are compilatory; the third part (from 913 on) is original. The third part reflects the views of the author, an adherent of the aristocrats in the Byzantine government service, who supported Romanus I. The chronicle of Symeon has been preserved in various recensions erroneously bearing the names of Theodosius of Melitene, Leo the Grammarian, and other authors. It was translated into Slavonic. Some poems and letters by Symeon are also extant.
