Uniontown,
city (1990 pop. 12,034), seat of Fayette co., SW Pa., near the W.Va. line; settled c.1767, inc. as a city 1916. It is a farm trade center and an industrial city. Formerly noted for its production of coal and coke, the city now manufactures machinery, medical supplies, and clothing. Food and lumber are processed, apples and alfalfa are grown, and there is livestock and dairying. Uniontown is the seat of the Fayette campus of Pennsylvania State Univ. Gen. George C. MarshallMarshall, George Catlett,1880–1959, American general and cabinet member, b. Uniontown, Pa. A career army officer, Marshall graduated from the Virginia Military Institute.
