Qalam

(Arabic, from the Greek kalamos, “reed”), a reed pen. The qalam has been used for writing since ancient times. In the nations of the medieval East that used the Arabic alphabet, there were various methods of cutting, sharpening, and splitting the reed for various types of writing. In medieval Eastern treatises, a paintbrush was also called a qalam.
