Tolbukhin District

an administrative unit in northeastern Bulgaria, mainly on the Dobrudzha Plateau. It is bounded on the east by the Black Sea. Area, 4,770 sq km. Population, 242,000 (1973). The administrative center is the city of Tolbukhin.

Tolbukhin District produces a significant part of Bulgaria’s agricultural products and ranks first in the country in the yield of wheat, corn, and sunflowers. Cattle-raising, sheep-raising (more than 600,000 sheep), and poultry farming are of major importance. The district has food-processing, textile, footwear, and metalworking industries. Industry is concentrated mainly in the city of Tolbukhin. A natural-gas pipeline from the USSR passes through the district. The small seaports of Balchik and Kavarna are located in Tolbukhin District. The district also has seaside health resort complexes, such as Albena.
