Tumanov, Aleksei Tikhonovich

Born Feb. 1 (14), 1909, in the village of Ból’shoe Novo, in what is now Vologda Oblast; died Dec. 12,1976, in Moscow. Soviet scientist specializing in materials science. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1970). Honored Worker in Science and Technology of the RSFSR (1957). Member of the CPSU from 1932.

Tumanov graduated from the Moscow Electric Machine-building Institute in 1934. In 1938 he became president of the All-Union Institute of Aviation Materials. In 1967 he became a member of the Chief Editorial Board of the Great Soviet Encyclopedia.

Tumanov’s main works dealt with high-strength and heat-resistant alloys, composite and nonmetallic materials, and protective coatings. Tumanov was awarded the State Prize of the USSR in 1946 and 1967, as well as three Orders of Lenin, five other orders, and various medals.
