Tumasik
Tumasik
(also Tumasek), a medieval city-state in Southeast Asia, on the site of what is now Singapore. Tumasik is traditionally considered to have been founded in 1299; it was one of the states that were formed after the collapse of the Srivijaya empire. In the 14th century it came under Majapahit rule, but after the decline of the Majapahit state, Tumasik became a vassal of Ayutthaya (Siam). In 1401 the Majapahit prince Parameswara killed the ruler of Tumasik and took possession of the city; in 1402, however, the prince was driven out by Siamese troops. In the 15th century, Tumasik became part of the Malacca Sultanate. With the rise of Malacca, the importance of the city of Tumasik as a port and commercial center declined.
