Qasr Al-Khayr Al-Gharbi

an Arab castle east of Horns in Syria. The castle was built in 727, and its ruins are preserved. The castle is a typical example of the architectural structures built by the Umayyads in the desert: it is square in plan, with dwelling and housekeeping quarters symmetrically located around a court and with an outer wall having a majestic entrance and towers that are semicircular in plan. Within the castle were found frescoes, stucco reliefs, and fragments of sculpture (all now in the National Museum in Damascus). Late classical traditions are combined in the decorations with an inclination for or namentality and flatness. The decorative works are unique examples of the fine arts of the Arabic Middle Ages.
