pleural rub

A friction (grating) sound heard by a stethoscope during inspiration and expiration in patients with pleuritis, due to the rubbing of the visceral and parietal pleurae.
 
Aetiology
Pleuritis, pneumonia, pulmonary embolism.

pleural friction rub

The creaking, grating sounds made when inflamed pleural surfaces move during respiration. It is often heard only during the first day or two of a pleurisy. See also: rub
