Rhamphorhynchoidei

an order of extinct reptiles of the superorder Pterosauria. The reptiles were less specialized than the pterodactyls. The skull was somewhat massive, and the well-developed teeth were often large. The short cervical vertebrae had cervical ribs, and the tail was usually very long. The animals had long, narrow wings with nonfolding flight digits. The tibial bones were not fused, although the fibula was rudimentary. The animals ranged in size from several cm to 0.5 m. Their flight consisted mainly of soaring. The animals fed on insects and small fish. Their remains have been found in Jurassic deposits of Western Europe, East Africa, North America, and the USSR (southern Kazakhstan).
