Ukrainian Spotted Steppe Swine

a breed of swine of universal use. The breed was developed in the Ukrainian SSR by selection and inbreeding of black mottled (spotted) hogs, which appeared as mutant forms during the development of the purebred White Ukrainian Steppe breed. Introductory crossbreeding with boars of the Berkshire, Mangalitsa, and Landrace breeds was employed. The breed was confirmed in 1961.

Adult boars weigh 240–325 kg, and sows 200–260 kg. There are 11 or 12 young per farrow. Sows produce 60–70 kg of milk. When fattened for meat, the young weigh approximately 100 kg at the age of six or seven months. The sows are used in commercial crossbreeding with boars of the White Ukrainian Steppe and Large White breeds, as well as with Landraces. They are raised in the Ukrainian SSR.
