Ukrainian White Steppe Swine

a breed of swine of universal use. The breed was developed in Askaniia-Nova by Academician M. F. Ivanov. Small local late-maturing females were crossbred with Large White boars. Closely related hogs were mated to reinforce desirable qualities in the offspring. The breed was confirmed in 1934.

Adult boars weigh approximately 350 kg, and sows approximately 250 kg. There are 11 or 12 young per farrow, and sometimes as many as 25. Sows yield 75-80 kg of milk. The young mature early; when fattened for meat they weigh 95-100 kg at the age of six or seven months; 3.8-4 feed units are consumed per kilogram of weight gained. The animals are well adapted to the arid steppe zone. The boars are used for commercial crossbreeding with other breeds. The swine are raised in the Ukrainian SSR.
