Pliatt, Rostislav Ianovich

Born Nov. 30 (Dec. 13), 1908, in Rostov-on-Don. Soviet Russian actor. People’s Artist of the USSR (1961).

Pliatt studied drama under Iu. A. Zavadskii. Beginning in 1927, he first performed with the Theater-Studio under the direction of Zavadskii and then with the Gorky Theater in Rostov-on-Don. From 1938 to 1941 he acted in the Lenin Komsomol Moscow Theater, and from 1943 in the Mossovet Theater. His acting is distinguished by an intellectual approach, a gift for inner transformation, profound charm, and intelligent irony. His stage roles have included Krogstad in Ibsen’s A Doll’s House, Burmin in Simonov’s A Fellow From Our Town, Ninković in Nuŝić’s Madame Minister, Bernard Shaw in Kilty’s Dear Liar, Caesar in Shaw’s Caesar and Cleopatra, and Barclay Cooper in Delmar’s The Rest Is Silence. Pliatt has also appeared in films; his film roles include the Bachelor in The Foundling, Ianek in The Dream, Bubentsov in Spring, Green in Murder on Dante Street, and Dankevich in I Go Into the Storm. Among the roles he has created in television movies are Judge Irwin in All the King’s Men and Pastor Schlag in Seventeen Moments of Spring. Pliatt also performs in radio and stage shows. Pliatt has been awarded three orders and a number of medals.
