Pliensbachian Stage

Pliensbachian Stage

(named after the village of Pliensbach in the Federal Republic of Germany), the second stage from the top of the Lower Jurassic system. The Pliensbachian stage was established by the German geologist A. Oppel in 1858. It is divided into two substages: the Kariksian, or lower substage, and the Domerian, or upper substage. In a stratotype section it is represented by marls, clays, and numerous remains of ammonites. Deposits of the Pliensbachian stage, widely distributed in the USSR and Western Europe, are represented by clay and carbonate rocks.
