[rē′ä·trə‚piz·əm] (biology) Orientation response of an organism to the stimulus of a flowing fluid, as water.

Rheotropism

the property of roots of many plants growing in water to bend either against the current (positive rheotropism) or toward the current (negative rheotropism). Because the rheotropic reaction of the roots depends on the composition of the nutrient solution, rheotropism is sometimes believed to be a special case of chemotropism. At the same time, taking into account the high sensitivity of plants to all kinds of mechanical stimuli, rheotropism may be regarded as a weak manifestation of traumotropism.
