Plinthos

a wide, flat fired brick used in Byzantine construction. Plinthos was also used in ancient Russian church architecture between the tenth and the beginning of the 13th century, for example, the Cathedral of St. Sophia in Kiev (1037) and the Church of the Saviour at the village of Berestovo near Kiev (1113–25). Plinthos was often the basic material used for the structural elements of buildings.
