Toliatti

(until 1964, Stavropol’; renamed in honor of P. Togliatti), a city under oblast jurisdiction and the administrative center of Stavropol’ Raion, Kuibyshev Oblast, RSFSR.

Situated on the left bank of the Kuibyshev Reservoir, near the V. I. Lenin Volga Hydroelectric Power Plant, Tol’iatti has railroad and highway connections with Kuibyshev and Syzran’. It is a river port (seeVOLGA BASIN RIVER PORTS). Population, 438,000 (1975; 6,000 in 1897, 72,000 in 1959, and 251,000 in 1970). The city is divided into three urban raions.

What is now Tol’iatti was founded in 1738. When the V. I. Lenin Volga Hydroelectric Power Plant was built, the city was flooded by the plant’s reservoir; therefore, the entire city was relocated in the mid-1950’s.

An important industrial center, Tol’iatti is the site of the Kuibyshev Synthetic Rubber Plant and plants for the production of phosphorus, phosphorus-containing products, and nitrogen fertilizer. Machine building is represented by the Volgotsemmash Plant and an electrotechnical plant. The city also has a heat and power plant. There is food-processing industry in Tol’iatti. The city’s development was spurred by the construction (1967–72) of the Volga Automobile Works and related industry.

Educational institutions in Tol’iatti include a scientific research institute for cement machinery design, the All-Union Scientific Research Institute of Nonmetallic Materials, and a polytechnic institute. The city also has polytechnical, chemical engineering, and automotive technicums and an evening electrotechnical technicum, as well as medical, pedagogical, and music schools. Among Tol’iatti’s cultural institutions are a puppet theater and a museum of local lore.
