Qezel Owzan

(Safid Rud in its lower course), a river in Iran. Length, 720 km; basin area, 56,000 sq km.

The Qezel Owzan rises in the northwest spurs of the Zagros, crosses the Western part of the Iranian Plateau, passing through the western end of the Elburz Range, and falls into the Caspian Sea, forming a delta. The average yearly water discharge is approximately 130 cu m per sec (maximum, approximately 600 cu m per sec). There are two high water periods: spring, caused by thawing snow, and fall, by the rains.

Situated at the confluence of the Qezel Owzan and Shah Rud is the Shah-Banu-Farah water engineering system, which consists of a hydroelectric power plant (approximately 90 megawatts), a dam more than 100 m high, and a reservoir. More than 200,000 hectares of land are irrigated in the Qezel Owzan basin (wheat fields, fruit orchards, and vineyards).
