The tenet central to mainstream medical practice that an illness is most effectively treated by managing its symptoms. This is diametrically opposed to the approach espoused by alternative healthcare advocates, who ascribe to the belief that the underlying condition represents an “imbalance” which, once brought into “alignment”, will result in the disappearance of the symptom.
