Strauss, Robert (Schwartz)

(1918– ) lawyer, government official; born in Lockhart, Texas. After working for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (1941–45), he formed a profitable Dallas law firm. He served as Democratic Party chairman (1972–77), then was President Carter's Middle Eastern envoy in 1979 and campaign manager in 1980. Respected by Republicans, he served as ambassador to Russia (1991–92) to facilitate economic growth and encourage American investments.
